The Internet and the World Wide Web have come a long way over the past three decades. Ultimately, the beginning of the Web and Internet technology began with an idea in 1945. Vannevar Bush wrote an article in 1945 proposing a method for connecting microfiche documents with a series of links. The mouse, along with the idea of browsing and email, were developed in the 1960s. Today, web technology has advanced significantly and continues to do so. Web technologies are the programming languages, document display standards and services available when using the Web to interact with the Internet.
The Types of Web Technology
There are a number of web technologies available today. They include everything from communication services to analysis tools for business marketing. Some of the important technologies that allow us to browse the Internet are as follows:
- Markup languages
- Web services
- Web analytics
What Are Markup Languages?
The ability to view webpages over the Internet is a direct result of markup languages. Markup languages are a standard coding or programming language interpreted by Internet browsers. The different languages tell the browser how to present a webpage, what information it contains and how the page should behave in a user’s Internet browser.
One of the most popular markup languages is Hyper Text Markup Language, or HTML. This language was developed in 1990 by Tim Berners-Lee. Other examples of markup languages include the following:
- Extensible Markup Language (XML)
- Extensible HTML (XHLML)
- What Are Web Services?
Web services make the Internet a dynamic place. Web services allow devices, such as computers and mobile devices, to communicate over the Web. Many services are provided in a way that the user never sees the service in process. For example, cloud computing works in the background offering services, such as online storage.
What Is Web Analytics?
Businesses around the world develop their own websites to market products and services to potential customers. They also communicate extensively with current customers. In order to ensure the health of product sales, customer interaction and a number of other variables, people use web analytics to gather information.
Web analytics involves the collection of complex data. The data is gathered from an Internet domain name and fashioned into reports by the domain owner. The reports provide detailed information about a number of events. For example, a book seller may use web analytics to determine which part of a website results in the most sales.
